Lambda LS
STAND-ALONE XENON ARC LAMP AND POWER SUPPLY
In response to customer demand, Sutter Instrument Company has developed a stand alone xenon lighting system. The system consists of a xenon arc lamp, cold mirror, lamp housing and power supply integrated into a single enclosure. (The arc lamp is of the same construction as that used in our popular Lambda DG-4 wavelength switcher.) The lighting system is compatible with a number of microscope systems (Nikon, Zeiss, Leica and Olympus). The xenon bulb used has an input power rating of 175W. This represents more than twice the typical input power of epi-fluorescence lamps (75W) supplied as standard equipment with most fluorescence microscopes. The Lambda LS can thus deliver higher output in applications where dye concentration is limited by physiological constraints (e.g. access of dye to tissues of interest).
In addition to higher power, the Lambda LS integrated design offers reduced electrical interference due to start-up arcs and power supply noise. By eliminating a remote power supply, we also eliminate a common failure of standard designs; inability to light due to loss of the insulating characteristics of the high tension line.
Unlike the arc lamps used with most fluorescence microscopes, the bulb in the Lambda LS is pre-aligned using a parabolic mirror, thus producing a uniform, collimated beam of light. In the standard configuration, the Lambda LS uses an ozone-free xenon lamp capable of producing light output down to wavelengths near 340nm. An optional full spectrum lamp is available (200nm-700nm), but as with any UV generating light source, this lamp generates significant quantities of ozone and must be used in an adequately ventilated environment.. Both lamps produce relatively uniform output to wavelengths greater than 700nm.
We have designed our new lighting system for maximal flexibility. The optical port is C-mount threaded to accept optional adapters for direct coupling to various commercial fluorescence microscopes. The Lambda LS also can accomodate one of our Lambda 10-2 or Lambda 10-C filterwheels inside the lamp housing. An optional liquid light guide allows remote positioning of the lamp and relatively low-loss (70%) transmission of the lamp's light into an experimental setup.
